One of the most popular pests of grain crops - barn weevil - was found in grain that was stored in ancient Egypt. Today weevils appearing in housing can spoil all stocks of cereals and flour very quickly. By the way, these insects can be found anywhere in the world.
Who are weevils
The insect comes from a family of beetles, where there are more than 40 thousand different specimens. Barn weevils live in apartments together with a man - beetles up to 5 millimeters long with a dark-brown back with defective wings. Although the weevil cannot fly, this does not prevent it from spreading quickly over a large territory.
A female can lay up to 200 eggs at a time, each of which it allocates its mink in grains, and its entrance is closed with specific secretions remaining after laying eggs. On day 12, a larva hatches from an egg, which develops inside a grain and destroys it from the inside. A chrysalis also appears here. Then the grown bug damages the grain and gets out.
This all suggests that the process of "growing" of the insect is hidden from the human eye - we see only an adult insect. This is one of the main difficulties encountered in the fight against weevils.
The beetle prefers to eat wheat, barley, rice, corn and buckwheat. It can also live in pasta and old flour. If you find weevil in the croup, then it is impossible. You should immediately throw it away and think about how to get rid of pests.
How to deal with weevils in the kitchen
Due to the fact that the beetle has very sharp and powerful teeth, it easily bites into packages with grits and penetrates inside. That is why it is impossible to procrastinate with its liquidation. Thanks to several methods, this is not as difficult as it seems.
- If you find at least one weevil, it is recommended to carefully check all available pasta and cereals. Also pay attention to coffee, tea and cocoa located in the place where the beetle was found. Suspicious foods need to be thrown away immediately, since the secretions from the weevils are dangerous for their carcinogenic properties.
- Remember that insects love heat. When the air temperature drops to +5 degrees, they freeze, and at -5 all individuals and larvae die in a month. This suggests that cold is considered an effective method of controlling bugs. When you find the weevil in your kitchen, put the food for several days in the freezer or on the balcony (in winter). You can do the same with pasta bought at a store or market.
- Warming up cereals also negatively affects the reproduction of the insect. If the temperature lasts +40 to two days, then the beetles die, and at +50 this happens for 5-6 hours. Therefore, if you want to completely get rid of weevils, then heat the croup in the oven at +60 degrees.
- Store food only in glass or plastic. Today you can buy special containers for cereals, which are both convenient and useful.
- You can apply the action of garlic. Spread the peeled cloves in a container with cereals and leave for a long time. Beetles do not like this smell and quickly retire from your apartment.
- Wipe the cabinets where the products are stored with ordinary soap solution. For these purposes, you can still use water diluted with vinegar.
- Take a bay leaf and lavender, place them on shelves, and you will never encounter an invasion of weevils.
- Try not to accumulate a lot of cereals - buy them as needed. This will help to easily track the appearance of insects and get rid of them with the same simplicity.
What to do with weevils in the garden
In early spring, when it gets warmer up to +12 degrees, insects crawl to the earth's surface after hibernation and immediately begin to harm the buds and leaves of fruitful plants. Weevils should be disposed of as soon as you notice them.
Chip the bugs into a bucket, then treat the paper with special glue that does not dry out and wrap it around the tree trunk. Leave it for a while, wait for the insects to accumulate inside, then take the paper and burn it immediately. After that, it is recommended to whitewash the trunk with lime.
Dig the ground around the trees, spray the crown with garlic and onion broths. In order to prepare a decoction, it is worth taking garlic, onions and needles, pour them with water and leave for 14 days for fermentation. Next, strain the solution and dilute from a ratio of 1 liter per 10 liters of water. The spraying procedure should be carried out every week.
If you need to protect strawberries from weevils, then prepare the following solution: take 100 grams of mustard powder and dilute them with 3 liters of warm water. In addition, you can use another remedy: 3 kilograms of wood tar diluted with 10 liters of water, add 40 grams of liquid soap. Spraying should be done when the first buds appear on the strawberries.
If we talk about specialized drugs, then it is appropriate to use the following substances: "Spark - bio", "Agravertin" and "Fitoverm".
When weevils appear in the garden, they immediately gnaw the roots of the plants. First, collect the beetles by hand, then treat the crop with Deltamethrin, Diazinon and other means.
How to deal with weevil on indoor plants
Flowers on the windowsill also get sick. And very often the cause of these diseases is insects - parasites. Most often cyclamens, hydrangeas and roses suffer. Pour the Inta-Vir or Fufan plants, then wipe the leaves on the flowers with the same means. Be sure to transplant them into another, clean soil, and clean away from other plants.
These tips will help you permanently get rid of harmful insects and prevent their appearance. The main thing is to carefully read the instructions before using any biological preparations.
