The feeling of a “lump” in the throat is not only unpleasant, but also a symptom of the onset of the disease. Basically, the accumulation of mucus in the throat is a harbinger of a common cold. Getting rid of it on time you increase the chance of not getting sick. But getting sick in the cold season is very easy.
Causes of mucus in the throat
Excessive production of mucus in the respiratory tract is a natural protective reaction of the body to the infection that penetrated into it. With a sufficiently large accumulation of mucus in the airways and throat, the mucous membrane is irritated, which causes a cough, which is how the body removes bacteria along with mucus.
But with a protracted disease, the function of removing mucus can deteriorate, sputum accumulates and is distributed over the mucous membrane, causing diseases of all organs in its path: nose, nasopharynx, trachea, bronchi and, as a result, lungs.
The mucous membrane begins to actively produce the substance, not only with infection. This problem affects smokers, workers in harmful conditions and lovers of too hot and cold food and drinks. For these reasons, the mucous membrane is irritated, damaged, and with the help of enhanced mucus production, it tries to protect itself and repair the damage.
Important! Failure to take action on time can result in serious illness.
Another reason is allergy. With an allergic reaction, discharge from the eyes, nose, and throat intensifies. Sometimes a “lump” in the throat appears with diseases of the digestive tract: increased acidity of the stomach, gastritis, ulcer; as well as liver disease, pancreas.
The rarest cases of increased mucus production are neurological diseases. For example, a stroke or severe traumatic brain injury.
Symptoms associated with increased mucus secretion
In parallel with the “lump” in the throat, other signs of the disease appear:
- cough with hoarseness in the chest;
- feeling of a “lump” in the throat;
- persistent runny nose;
- sore throat, sore feeling;
- pain in the temples;
- chills from time to time;
- body aches;
- through time the appearance of elevated temperature.
How to get rid of mucus in the throat folk remedies
Gargling is the best way to get rid of mucus in the throat. When rinsing, the solution washes the entire surface of the mucous membrane of the pharynx, washing off all unnecessary.
- The most common method of getting rid of excess mucus is a solution of a tablespoon of any salt in a glass of warm water. The rinse procedure must be carried out three times a day, in parallel with the main treatment.
- A teaspoon of calendula tincture is diluted in a glass of boiled water and with the addition of a teaspoon of soda. The product fights well with germs, and soda also perfectly dilutes thick sputum.
- Honey is diluted in warm mineral water without gas. Such a drink is drunk throughout the day.

- A solution of a glass of water and a teaspoon of iodine also fights well with mucus and microbes in the oral cavity.
Note! You can gargle with a solution every morning for prevention.
In addition to rinsing, inhalations on herbs and compresses on the throat can be done. Inhalations are carried out as follows: a herbal decoction is prepared, over which you need to tilt your face and cover with a towel so that the vapors do not go out and fall only in the face.These pairs need to be breathed for 10-15 minutes, but not immediately after the broth has been prepared, so as not to get burned in hot fumes.
Important! Herbs give an easy result, so treatment with their use should last about a month. But you should first consult with a specialist so that there is no individual intolerance, and instead of treatment, a complication does not appear.
Prevention of excessive mucus in the throat
You need to start with proper nutrition and getting rid of bad habits. From bad habits, not only sputum production appears, many processes are disrupted in the body, the proper functioning of all organs, starting with the respiratory system. Therefore, it is so necessary to quit smoking and not abuse alcohol.
Nutrition should be balanced, cooking methods preferably without frying and using large amounts of fat and oil. Of the products you need to increase the number of those that contain vitamins E and C.
It is worth paying attention to the amount of fluid consumed per day - pure, and preferably mineral water without gas should be 1.5 liters per day for moderate human activity, and 2 liters per day for high activity.
In the case of an allergic reaction, the source of the allergy should be avoided. If necessary, take special medications to help reduce allergic symptoms.
At the first sensation of accumulation of mucus in the throat, pay attention if there are any other symptoms of the onset of the disease. For prevention, immediately gargle. If no serious symptoms are observed anymore, this is probably a temporary reaction to an external factor. It is necessary to carry out prophylaxis for several days in a row to make sure there is no disease.
If along with the “lump” in the throat other symptoms appear in parallel, in the near future try to make an appointment for an examination and consultation with a doctor. The sooner treatment is started, the greater the chance of avoiding a protracted disease with possible complications.
