How to clean things from greasy stains using folk and improvised means
- Salt. This method is very simple and effective. Sprinkle with salt the freshly planted stain and rub it into the fabric until it "completely" disappears. Salt absorbs all fat. To get rid of greasy marks, for example, on tulle, mix the salt in warm water and soak contaminated textiles.
- Laundry soap. We are talking about a 72% brown soap, familiar to us from the Soviet era. It turns out that it is an excellent assistant in the household. Including in the fight against greasy marks. If you put a stain on your clothes at home or away, first wash it with laundry soap. But what to do in the absence of the ability to act promptly, or when the stain has already eaten into the tissue? Soap area that is contaminated should be soaped and left. After a few hours, the item should be washed. To clean the greasy cuffs and collar on the shirt, rub them with salt two hours before washing.
- There is a dishwashing liquid in every home. If the pollution occurred recently, then dropping a few drops of the product on it and waiting about 30 minutes, you can simply wipe it and then wash it. In order not to spoil the down jacket with repeated washings, apply a few drops to the dirt, and then wash in a delicate mode.
- Ammonia is used to remove many types of stains. It is best suited for artificial fabrics. In an incomplete glass of water, add one teaspoon of alcohol and a pinch of salt. Soak a cotton pad in this solution and wipe the grease stain.
- Glycerin is very effective in controlling the fat on your clothes. Use a few drops of glycerin to give things an original look. First apply to the stain, wait, and then wash as usual.
- Table vinegar. This is a universal cleanser. The stains will easily disappear if you treat them with vinegar diluted with water in a 1: 2 ratio.
- Potato starch, thanks to its small particles, penetrates deep into the structure of the tissue. Sprinkle starch on the spot and the stain will disappear after 20 minutes.
- Blotting paper. If it is at your fingertips, lay out your clothes, laying thin paper sheets on top and bottom of the stain, and iron with a preheated iron. Fat is absorbed into the paper. The blotter should be changed if the stain is very large.
- Mustard. Another way to fight fat is mustard powder. Dilute it with water to the consistency of sour cream and apply on the stain. Leave the mustard paste for an hour, then wash with ordinary powder.
- A piece of chalk. Sprinkle the contaminated area with powdered chalk. After a few hours, wipe with a damp cloth or wash.
Chemical methods for cleaning clothes from greasy stains
Chemical stain removers are specially formulated compounds, a wide range of which you will find on store shelves. They must be used with caution, depending on the color and type of fabric. Be sure to read the instructions and take precautions before using these tools, as they are quite aggressive.
Dry cleaning is an extreme stain removal method, but completely effective. You can take your favorite thing to dry cleaning, and it will become like new. Professionals will select the appropriate method for each contamination without causing harm to the material.
How to remove traces of fat from different types of tissues
- To remove stains from fabrics of dark colors, iron clothes with a heated iron, putting tissue paper on top of the stain.
- Light tissue is cleaned with chalk, powdered. Sprinkle the stain with powder, and after a while, clean with a clothes brush.
- To clean things from wool, use refined gasoline or acetone. Moisten the area with a damp cotton swab, and then iron it by applying blotting paper.
- Silk and satin fabrics are cleaned with starch, chalk powder, talc. Sprinkle the stain and leave for 10 hours. Then shake the item, or gently clean with a soft brush.
- With cotton items, remove unpleasant traces with gasoline or acetone, carefully treating the place of contamination.
- Flax is also unpretentious in handling, and cleaned gasoline and a solvent are used to remove stains from linen.
- To remove fat from velvet, sew a small bag, pour heated sand into it and gently press it to the contaminated place until the stain disappears.
- If fat spoils your jeans, put grated raw potatoes on this place, peel and wash in an hour. For a fresh stain, a dishwashing detergent or soap is also suitable. These products will help you maintain your denim color.
- Spots on leather or suede should be treated with oxalic acid or sprinkled with talcum powder, potato or corn starch. You can also wash your skin with warm milk.
All of the above methods should be chosen, focusing on how much time has passed since the moment of pollution. A fresh spot is usually darker than the fabric itself, and an old one is lighter than the surface around it.
To remove fresh stains, use:
- Salt.
- Dishwashing liquid.
- Soap.
- Starch.
- Blotting paper.
- Mustard
To remove old, stubborn stains, they are best suited:
- Petrol.
- Acetone.

How to remove greasy dirt from other surfaces
To clean home textiles, pre-soaking for several hours in a salt solution is suitable. For cooking, use a glass of salt for 3-4 liters of warm water. After that, you can just wash it with a simple washing powder. In order for the stains of the sofa or armchairs to disappear, use the simplest method - rub the salt. Then wipe with a napkin, soaking it in an alcohol solution.
The carpet can be cleaned by sprinkling wood sawdust on a dirty place, after moistening them in gasoline. Repeat this procedure several times until the stain completely “disappears”. Sprinkle carpet with talcum powder is another way to remove fat. To clean carpets after the procedure, use a brush or vacuum cleaner.
The origin of stains and the fight against them
Remove food stains with soap, salt, starch, chalk, utensils. Traces of engine oil are removed by more aggressive means: gasoline, solvent, acetone, alcohol. Treat dirt from paint or drying oil with solvent or gasoline. Traces of lipstick, which is also made on the basis of fat, are removed if they are treated with a cotton swab immersed in turpentine, or pour a few drops of ammonia.
There is one more important point that should be taken into account before starting the fight against greasy marks. Before applying any product or solution, check its effect on another piece of similar tissue. This applies to all solvents based on petroleum products and alcohol, which can cause irreparable harm to the fabric. Or treat the thing with a solution in places inaccessible to the eye, for example, from the wrong side. Do not forget about safety when using such tools. Be sure to open the windows and ventilate the room, wear rubber gloves to avoid skin contact.
Stains of fat appear frequently and unpredictably. Neither women who spend a lot of time in the kitchen, nor men after repairing the car, nor children who clumsily bring a spoon with food are safe from pollution. Greasy marks can spoil the mood after a festive feast and visiting guests. But do not let these “troubles” bother you.
Now you know many ways to deal with annoying spots. And easily pick up your effective method. Armed with the knowledge described above, you can easily arrange noisy gatherings with friends at home, repair a car or stand by the stove, preparing a delicious dinner. And your clothes will always be clean and tidy.
