How to get rid of toothache at home

Toothache invades our lives without warning and makes its own adjustments to the usual routine of the day. Nobody is capable of indifferent to it - pain in the teeth makes it impossible to concentrate on work, interferes with sleep and exhausts the body. The only way to get rid of it is to eliminate the problem in the dental chair, entrusting this work to a specialist. But what if there is no way to go to the doctor right now? Some measures will have to be taken to ease the torment at home.

How to get rid of a toothache

Reasons for toothache

Various causes can cause toothache, which are very difficult to determine on your own. Most often, the tooth begins to hurt due to the fact that the nerve is damaged, or the tissue around the tooth. Much also depends on the nature of the pain - they can be constant aching, throbbing, shooting, surging into the temple or ear, cause a headache, intensify during meals, or under the influence of high or low temperature.

The most common dental diseases that cause pain:

  • caries at a certain stage of development when the dental nerve is affected;
  • enamel cracks;
  • teething wisdom tooth;
  • periodontitis, pulpitis, gum abscess;
  • crown crack, seal failure;
  • exposure of the tooth neck.

Any of these problems requires a visit to the dentist. Do not count on the temporary elimination of pain by independent forces - even if you manage to temporarily stop the pain, this does not mean that you managed to cure the disease. Tissues located around the teeth are not able to recover and uncomfortable sensations can return at any time.

If the soreness has passed and does not return for a long time, this is a dangerous sign, as this may indicate the transition of inflammation to a chronic form. At the same time, nerve tissues begin to die, which often causes such dire consequences as osteomyelitis, purulent abscess, and phlegmon. That is why, with the slightest unpleasant sensations in the teeth, you can not delay a visit to the doctor. Only a dentist can determine the pathology and carry out the necessary treatment.

How to quickly relieve tooth pain

If the tooth aches at a time when you can’t immediately visit the dentist, it is recommended to take a number of measures that will help alleviate the condition at home:

  • Brush your teeth well. Using dental floss, clean the spaces between the teeth.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm saline with a small amount of soda.
  • Drink a tablet of anesthetic or use one of the recipes of alternative medicine.

If the cause of the pain is in developing caries, first you need to eliminate any factors that caused the pain attack. For example, often pain occurs during a meal, when pieces of food fall into a hole and cause irritation of the nerves. Therefore, after eating, you need to thoroughly rinse your mouth and brush your teeth, or use chewing gum.

Rinsing will be more effective if, instead of plain water, a decoction of herbs with a pronounced antibacterial effect is used. Such herbs include: calendula, calamus bark, chamomile, sage, St. John's wort. You can drown out a toothache by rinsing your mouth with a solution of furatsilina, potassium permanganate or iodine. Furacilin needs 2 tablets per glass of water, 2-3 drops will be enough iodine, and potassium permanganate is taken in such an amount that a pale pink solution is obtained.

You can rinse your mouth with strong alcohol. Ordinary vodka is best.You need to put it in your mouth and hold it for a while near a sick tooth. The effect will be about the same as when injected with lidocaine - the gums become numb and the pain subsides. After this procedure, swallowing vodka is undesirable; it is better to just spit it out.

Another interesting way to relieve toothache is the method of exposure to cold at certain points on the body. The ice cube, gently massaging, rubbed into the gap between the thumb and forefinger. After a few minutes of such exposure, the pain will begin to decrease.

Alternative methods for toothache

Some traditional medicine helps to reduce toothache no less effectively than medicines, while most of them do not have harmful side effects.

Alternative methods for toothache

  1. Sage. Sage broth is used to quickly get rid of unpleasant pain in the teeth. To cook it, you need to take 1 tbsp. this plant, pour a glass of clean (preferably boiled) water, and then boil for 10 minutes. Then remove from heat, allow to cool and rinse their mouth for half an hour. This broth can be simply typed into the mouth and kept near a diseased tooth. It is necessary to rinse with warm, but not hot broth. If it has cooled, it is changed to fresh.
  2. Corvalol. Used as an anesthetic of local action. They are impregnated with cotton wool and applied to the affected area. After a few minutes, the pain will lessen. Instead of corvalol, valocordin or valoserdine can be used with the same success - their composition is almost exactly the same. An ordinary ice cube, if applied to a sore gum, will also have an analgesic effect.
  3. Cloves. The composition of fragrant cloves includes eugenol - a substance that has a sedative effect. A clove bud can be applied to the gum of a diseased tooth, or chewed for 5 minutes. A dozen buds of this plant can be added to any mouthwash, this will also help to cope with unpleasant sensations.
  4. Clove oil. A few drops of it are applied to a diseased tooth, or a cotton wool is moistened in it and applied to the gum. Clove oil not only helps to cope with dental diseases, but also helps to strengthen the body.
  5. Onion and garlic. In equal proportions, garlic and onions are taken, mixed and crushed to a mushy state, then a little salt is added. This mixture is pushed into the hole of a diseased tooth, and the top is covered with cotton wool. Salt helps to dissolve pus, and onions with garlic have an antiseptic effect. Garlic can be used in another way: with a clove to rub the wrist of that hand, which is located on the opposite side from the diseased tooth.
  6. Black tea. The composition of tea includes tannic acid, which helps relieve inflammation and reduce pain. A packet of tea should be put in hot water for a few seconds, removed from there, allowed to cool slightly, then applied to a diseased tooth. Do not use a hot tea bag, as high temperatures can only aggravate the pain. This applies not only to the tea bag. It is generally impossible to warm a sick tooth. Cold helps to deal with pain much more effectively.

Medicines for tooth pain

If the above measures didn’t really help, you will need to use “heavy artillery” and take one or two tablets of anesthetic.

The following drugs are most effective in combating toothache: Ketanov (contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding), Sedalgin, Nurofen, Analgin (there are contraindications), Baralgin. These drugs not only reduce pain symptoms, but also reduce inflammatory processes.

No less effective is ordinary aspirin. Few people know that it directly affects the center in the brain that is responsible for pain. Aspirin is part of such drugs as Acelisin, Citramon, Asfen.To relieve toothache, you can take a tablet of any of these drugs, and it is recommended to drink them with milk to reduce the negative effect of aspirin on the gastric mucosa.

In no case should you apply an aspirin tablet to a diseased tooth. This can only aggravate the situation by strengthening the process of suppuration, or even get a burn of the mucous layer.

Another drug, Actasulide, also relieves toothache very quickly, blocking pain impulses. For children, this medication is contraindicated, as well as for people with gastrointestinal diseases.

All of these drugs help temporarily reduce pain symptoms. They do not have any therapeutic effect. Even if the pain is gone and does not appear in the coming days, you still need to visit the dentist. Otherwise, the disease will become chronic, when inflammatory processes continue to develop without pronounced symptoms, and this is fraught with many dangerous consequences.

Any methods of relieving toothache at home is only a temporary measure. Apply these methods only when there is no way to immediately go to the dentist. To prevent such situations, it is recommended to regularly visit the dentist and carefully care for the oral cavity.
