Despite the abundance of the modern market for finishing materials, wallpaper still occupy a leading position. This is due to their diversity, both in the color palette and in many other parameters.
However, when choosing them, this very variety can play a cruel joke with the buyer. As a result, wallpapers can be matched to their own expectations. Therefore, you need to choose the right color and pattern, but also their type.
Benefits of Vinyl Wallpaper
When decorating the room, it is recommended that special attention be paid to vinyl wallpaper. Compared with classic paper and other models, they have the following advantages:
- The abundance of models. The beauty of vinyl wallpaper is immediately evident. Their lineup is not limited only to drawings and color palette. In addition to the usual smooth wallpaper, you can buy textured, which can simulate fabric, plaster and even stone.
- Improved sound insulation. Many residents of multi-apartment buildings are aware of a situation where they have to not eavesdrop on their neighbors' conversations. Vinyl wallpapers have a much better sound insulation effect than their paper counterparts.
- Hiding flaws. Vinyl wallpapers do not require perfectly even walls. Small cracks and pits will become completely invisible under this material.
In addition to the above advantages, one can also note the durability and resistance to moisture and mechanical damage. Those who are worried about the air condition in their own homes can also be calm. Paint for vinyl wallpapers is made on a water basis, so it does not emit any harmful substances.
Types of Vinyl Wallpaper
If the lines that were written earlier were able to convince you to stay on vinyl wallpaper, you should understand their types. So, these wall paintings are of the following types: on paper and non-woven base.
The advantages of the second option are obvious. Vinyl wallpapers with non-woven backing are more durable and better hide the unevenness of the wall. In addition, gluing them is much easier, since the adhesive is applied only to the walls.
The top layer, that is, the vinyl itself, can also be of different types. There are 4 types of them:
- Smooth;
- Foamed;
- Solid;
- Screen printing.
To figure out which option is best for your room, it’s worth a brief look at each of them.
Smooth vinyl
Smooth vinyl is the perfect solution for your kitchen or bathroom. They withstand high humidity. In addition, they can be washed even using various detergents. To solve various design problems, there are also relief models imitating masonry or brickwork.
Foamed vinyl
This type of wallpaper is the most popular. Its main feature is the skillful concealment of even irregularities noticeable at first glance. They have a porous foam structure, which allows them to pass air well. To clean them, wet rags are allowed.
Hard vinyl
Hard vinyl wallpapers can mimic a variety of wall materials (fabrics, plaster, or tile). Also, this species best tolerates various mechanical damage. It is also worth noting that it passes air well.
Silk screen printing
A special manufacturing method allows you to ensure that their appearance resembles an elegant silk fabric. In addition to its beautiful appearance, the wallpaper is strong and durable. However, the price for such material will be slightly higher than other models.
Sticking Steps
When all the pros and cons are weighed, the wallpaper is bought, the furniture from the room is taken out, and the walls are already prepared - there is no turning back, you should proceed to gluing the room. The whole procedure can be divided into 4 conditional stages, each of which will be described below.
Stage One. Wallpaper Preparation
Each roll should be checked for matching shades (it is better to do this before the purchase), since the same models of different parties may vary slightly. After that, you can proceed to cutting the canvas. At the same time, it is important that the pattern when joining the segments is integral.
Stage Two. Sticking
Wallpapering is the main and most important stage, so you need to treat it with maximum responsibility and attention. The first thing to do is to accurately mark the wall to stick each piece. After that, glue is applied to its surface. By the way, the correct choice of glue is a very important condition for wallpapering. Therefore, you should choose only a quality product that is suitable for non-woven vinyl wallpaper. So, it has already been mentioned that it is not necessary to apply glue to the canvas. However, for better fixation, it is still recommended to lubricate their edges with adhesive.
After gluing, carefully trim the excess wallpaper from above and below. Use for this you need only a sharp knife. In addition, everything should be done smoothly. But if some oversights were made, they can be covered with a baseboard from below, and moldings from above.
Stage Three. What to do with sockets and switches
If you are wallpapering for the first time and still do not know how to paste over places with switches and sockets, the following information will certainly be useful for you.
In fact, there is nothing complicated in this procedure. First you need to de-energize all the objects in the room and remove the boxes from them. After that, the wallpaper is glued, and a cross-shaped incision is made in the place of the outlets. The canvas is wrapped inward and left to dry. Then the boxes are mounted back and electricity is supplied. As you can see, there is nothing complicated in this, therefore even the “green” master will master this procedure.
Stage Four. Drying
All procedures have been done, and the matter remains small. It is necessary that the wallpaper is completely dry. It will take no more than a day. You do not need to do anything. The main thing is to ensure a positive temperature and the absence of drafts.
How to stick wallpaper in the corner
Before embodying each stage in reality, you should also learn how to glue vinyl wallpapers in the corners. After all, this place can cause a lot of trouble. The thing is that quite often the corners in the room are uneven and when glued it will definitely affect. You can verify this with a plumb line or level.
In other cases, you can do without it. However, the wallpaper should be glued with an overlap. The first segment is glued so that one of its edges is approximately 4 cm in contact with the adjacent wall. After that, with the help of a spatula, the canvas is well attached to the corner. The second cloth is glued with an overlap of no more than 2 cm. The remaining parts are glued in the usual way, that is, butt.
Following all these tips, the room will definitely look great, and the quality of the vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven basis will preserve the original appearance of the room for a long time.
