There probably is no such person who would never see drywall. Therefore, when choosing a material for finishing wall decoration, it is often the wallpaper that is chosen. What? Gypsum plasterboard is perfectly even, only know that it is smeared with glue, and smooth the canvas.
And as everything dries, admire the translucent green shade of the paper, the joints of sheets and seams. A little later, you can observe gradually protruding rust from self-tapping screws and dark spots from the fungus creeping along. As one movie hero said - lepota!
How to glue wallpaper on drywall so as not to redo the repair from scratch? Now we learn all the subtleties of the process.
Drywall Preparation
The longest and tedious stage of all work is preparation. Most of the time is spent on drying all layers of coatings than on wallpapering. But, neglecting this point, then you will have to spend twice as much time on the alteration of the repair, plus the cash cost of buying new materials. It is better to hedge and complete the training efficiently. A lot of nerves will be saved.
To complete all the work you will need:
- Putty. Ready mix or powder is sold for cooking yourself.
- A pair of spatulas. Wide and narrow.
- Reinforcing tape.
- Sandpaper.
- Acrylic primer deep penetration.
- Wide brush, short hair roller or wide nozzle spray.
- Personal protective equipment. Glasses, gloves, respirator.
The list is impressive, but it is a necessary minimum. Materials need to be purchased so that is enough to putty the entire surface and still remains in reserve. In the repair process, you will need some more little things, but they are in every house, you don’t have to purchase them specifically. For example, a knife or rags.
The order of work. First you need to check all the places where drywall is attached to the guide profiles. Self-tapping screws should be slightly recessed inward. If they are flush, then you need to carefully tighten them a little. Otherwise, the masking putty will go down the hill, and the putty knife will cling to the head in operation.
Now you need to primer drywall. Great job with a wide brush or roller. The places of corners and joints will have to be processed with a small brush. By the way, if you stocked up with a spray nozzle with a wide nozzle, then this stage will pass quickly, efficiently and without problems. Only be sure to periodically shake the container to avoid delamination of the primer. And try not to puff in one place several times. Do you really need drips on the floor?
After the primer has dried, you will need a reinforcing tape. Some sources write that it looks like a bandage and sticks very well to the surface, as it has its own adhesive layer. Doctors! The tape looks like a rare mesh and does not stick at all without assistance. You can stick it on PVA, but professionals do much easier.
A putty layer is applied at the joint or seam with a spatula with a thickness of not more than 4 mm. Stretch the tape on top. Then it is slightly pressed into the putty. The resulting mixture is carefully removed with a spatula so as not to move the tape.
While the strengthening of the joints and joints dries, we will deal with self-tapping screws. Sometimes they tend to rust and stain through the top decorative coating. Finishing specialists use paint or a primer for metal.
Well, if there was a bank in the pantry, then forward, to putty. By the way, at home, all this is perfectly replaced by the most ordinary transparent nail polish. We apply pointwise on the heads of the screws and allow to dry thoroughly. 20 minutes is enough for the eyes.
During this time, putty with reinforcing tape has already seized (after all, on the basis of gypsum). You can take sandpaper and carefully polish all the bumps.Only without fanaticism! In a circular motion, remove notches, but not a layer of putty.
Naturally, glasses, a respirator and gloves were already dressed up. For the dust is fine and caustic. After polishing, dust is shaken off the wall. This can be done with a brush or brush. The varnish on the heads of the screws has already dried up, now you need to align the recesses in the places of fasteners. With a narrow spatula, with a smooth motion, cover the hole with putty. The tool is held at an angle of approximately 40 °. If everything is done correctly, then in place of the former dent remains a smooth smooth surface.
Now we need to wait for the putty to set in order to begin the main work. Do not whine, then say thank you. Too lazy to do? Yes, sculpt the wallpaper directly on drywall! After a while, you still have to change them. Then we’ll see how you will tear them away from the wall. With pieces of drywall or with whole plates?
You will not tear off. Just stick new ones on top. And why then bought foamed vinyl now? How then will you sculpt new wallpapers on them? I am an artist, I see so. Well, as they say, a household business ...
There are recommendations to use two types of putty. One coarse grinding, for basic leveling. The second - shallow, for finishing. What are these expenses for? Drywall is almost always perfectly flat, it does not need to be aligned. Instead of three layers and a week for periods of drying, one thin layer will be enough.
In addition, the primer has excellent adhesion. Even heavy dense wallpapers will not fall off. The main task of plasterboard puttying is isolation from wallpaper glue and tinting in light color. No need to impose 5 layers, one is enough.
Using a wide trowel, putty is applied to the wall with smooth, precise movements. Large irregularities smooth out immediately, small blemishes after drying remove sandpaper. Large surfaces are coated with a wide spatula, and angles and slopes are narrowed with a narrow one.
After about 40 minutes, the putty is already set enough so that it can be easily sanded. The final step will be the application of the last coat of primer. This will allow wallpaper glue not to be absorbed into the putty instantly.
Tip. It is a liquid solution of wallpaper glue that is best to prime the wall. Then the glued canvases will hold very firmly.
Glue drywall wallpaper
After the prepared surface has finally dried, you can proceed directly to wallpapering. The process itself is no different from working with a regular wall. You will need:
- Wallpaper and appropriate glue.
- Capacity for glue.
- Rubber roller or plastic spatula.
- Short hair roller or wide brush.
- Plumb bob or rope with heavy nut.
- Stepladder and assistant.
The order of work. If the wall is prepared correctly, then things will go smoothly. Measure a straight line along the plumb line at the window. For convenience, you can draw it with a simple pencil. Then cut the canvas wallpaper on the height of the wall plus 10 cm for allowances.
By the way, glue for wallpaper must be bought appropriate. For example, sculpting paper wallpaper on an expensive one, for fiberglass - squandering. And heavy non-woven to universal or ordinary - doubling waste. Such an adhesive mixture will not support the weight, all your work will fall off, and you will have to buy materials for repairs again.
Tip. When diluting glue, always measure 200-400 ml less water than recommended by the manufacturer. As a rule, wallpaper sticks to a thick mixture better at times.
A plasterboard wall is smeared with wallpaper glue a little more than the width of the wallpaper. It is very convenient to use glue with a dye. Immediately visible gaps. Do not be afraid that the color will appear on the outside or will be visible through light wallpaper. When dried, it disappears completely.
The canvas itself is laid out on a flat surface and the adhesive composition is also applied. No need to wait for time to impregnate the canvas. Modern wallpapers do not need this. They can be glued immediately.
They start from the ceiling, gradually move down and at the same time from the center to the sides. Careful smoothing without strong pressure is the guarantee that the sheets do not fall off after drying. After gluing, move away from the wall and carefully look from the side. Suddenly, somewhere there were bubbles of air or wrinkles. Get rid of them immediately, when dried, they will not disappear.
By the way, it is better to smooth out wallpaper with a volumetric pattern or bulges with a rubber roller, rather than a spatula. Otherwise, you can accidentally damage the relief pattern.
Tip. Do not use old rags to wipe off excess glue. The fabric can be dyed, and it will be difficult to remove the stain from the wallpaper.
Gluing drywall wallpaper is better to start from the window, and finish at the front door. Thus, possible flaws will be less noticeable.
It is advisable that the joints of the wallpaper do not fall on the seams in the wall - as the frequent recommendation in the articles says. And what was the point then in gluing reinforcing tape and puttying? Glue the wallpaper as it will be convenient, without regard to the seams and others like them.
That's just with the corners of the room you need to be careful. The most common mistake of almost everyone who makes repairs on their own is to stick the canvas in the corner. This must be done strictly butt. The overlap or even worse, the middle of the sheet, when dried, they will stretch. Instead of an angle, you get a semicircle. Keep this in mind.
And further. Do not cut the entire roll of wallpaper in one dimension at once. The differences in the height of the walls around the perimeter of the room may be too large. The result will be a shortage of a few centimeters, or vice versa, cut too much. And if a wallpaper with a large clear pattern, then with the selection and incorrect measurement of the length of the paintings there will be an acute shortage of material.
How to glue drywall wallpaper? It turns out quite simple. The main thing is to properly prepare the wall. This will be 80% success. The remaining 20% is a matter of sleight of hand. A little zeal and everything will work out. Have a good repair without a headache and extra costs.
