The most enduring ones remain on the winter treadmill, and the majority of runners prefer sports clubs at this time of year. And the reason is not that someone does not like the creaking of snow or the frosty air. The secret is in the right equipment, which, in general, is difficult to pick up.
The first and most important factor for a comfortable run in winter is the layering of clothes. The first layer, which is closer to the body, is designed to absorb moisture, protecting the body from hypothermia. Second, it’s average - warming. Top protects from the weather. The middle layer can be neglected when the air temperature is -10, and if it drops below, then this clothing is useful. But at the same time, such a “sandwich” should provide freedom of movement.
Before you find out what you need to do a run, you should exclude the mistakes of many inexperienced runners who, once burned by a frosty wind, have lost interest in sports in winter conditions.
Mistakes on a winter run
- Do not warm yourself, as if you were going to stand in line. Only in the initial meters will there be a feeling of cold. After a short run, the first drops of sweat will appear, and this is a risk of getting a cold. In addition, surplus clothing will seem like a heavy load.
- It cuts the ear, but it is not recommended to wear cotton items. The first, worn layer should be made of special synthetics that remove moisture. In sports stores a wide range of such clothes.
Experienced runners are not afraid of the cold, they know how to keep fit at any time of the day. Even if the equipment is thin, frost is not an obstacle for them. Beginners should heed the advice of seasoned ones.
How to dress for a winter run
Footwear. It should be of high quality, waterproof, warm and preferably with a grooved sole to prevent slipping. One option is ice boots, which can be used even in ice. It’s good when the boot shaft is high and the tongue protects against getting inside the snow. An excellent material for running shoes is nubuck, which has water-repellent properties. As for the internal fur, it can be artificial. Well-worn runners prefer shoes with fasteners, such as chains, which provide reliable grip on a snowy road. Lacing is also important. Long and sturdy laces will allow you to firmly fix the leg, like skaters. In addition, sneakers should not be cramped, it is even better to buy 0.5 sizes larger. And pay attention to the insoles. Well, if there is an opportunity to purchase a replacement pair, because after each run they will have to be dried.
The first layer of clothing. Thermal underwear is an ideal option. Lightweight, warms up even at very low temperatures, does not constrain movements. When it’s not possible to buy this, a turtleneck or a long-sleeved polyester T-shirt will replace it (this material allows the body to breathe). In colder weather, the addition will be a sweater or sweatshirt.
Pants. Do not wear multiple pairs at the same time. The lower part of the clothes for running in the winter should be free. There are special models equipped with a lining that retains heat and protects from wind. At sub-zero temperatures, additionally use sports thermal underwear or fleece tights. Use leg warmers to protect your ankles from frost and wind.
Third layer. A windbreaker will do. When buying, choose a model with an elastic band at the bottom of the product, which will save heat.
You can not neglect the little things. Part of the thermal energy goes through the head, arms, legs, so it is worth considering the elements of the wardrobe for these parts of the body.
Socks. They must be warm, otherwise frozen feet will cause discomfort to the whole body. Only woolen products do not fit and a multilayer version is not appropriate here. Up to -15, one pair is enough, and already below this mark you can add another layer. It is advisable to purchase a high model without seams to protect the calves from freezing. There are running thermal socks with a special composition.
Hat, gloves. Head and hands should be warm. As a headdress, a double hat is suitable. It is better if there is a balaclava that protects the face from the cold, and the presence of cutouts for the eyes allows you to see the treadmill. Gloves should also be warm, and even better mittens (when fingers are together, heat lasts longer).
Another seemingly insignificant accessory is glasses. There is no need for them, but they are recommended for a better view during snowfall or bright winter sun. And such an element as hygienic lipstick will protect against chapping of the lips.
And the last detail. For a run in winter, equipment must be selected in dark colors. Such things are much warmer because they absorb light energy.
To summarize. With the right selection of clothes, taking into account all the details of the wardrobe, running in the winter will not only be safe, but also bring satisfaction.
