Any drug should be taken correctly, otherwise the therapeutic effect will not be achieved, this applies to eye drops. In order for the medicine to penetrate the eye and begin to act, it is necessary to instill it according to the rules, thanks to which it will be possible not only to keep drops on the mucous membrane, but also to avoid possible side effects.
What are eye drops
Eye drops are solutions of drugs used to treat ophthalmic diseases. Medicines of this type are made from oily or aqueous solutions of the active substance. These sterile drugs are used both for the treatment of eye diseases and for the relief of unpleasant symptoms.
Drops are made by special technology, due to which the maximum effect is achieved. The components of the solution are selected in such a way that after the drug enters the mucous membrane, the active substance penetrates through the cornea into the anterior chamber of the eyeball within half an hour.
To maximize the drug effect, the correct dosage of the drug should be considered, following the exact recommendations of the ophthalmologist.
How to apply eye drops
If contact lenses are used, eye drops should not be used, since the active substance of the drug can accumulate on the mucosa, which can lead to an overdose. In cases where the patient cannot completely refuse to wear contact lenses, they should be removed during instillation of drops and not worn for half an hour after this procedure.
If the ophthalmologist has prescribed several eye drops at the same time, then an interval of 20-30 minutes should be maintained between their use. That is, first inject one medicine, after half an hour the second and after the same period of time the third, if necessary.
The duration of taking medicinal drops for the eyes is prescribed by an ophthalmologist. Usually, in case of acute infectious processes, it is required to use the medicine up to 12 times a day. To alleviate the condition and relieve the symptoms of acute diseases, drops up to 3 times a day are used.
If the doctor prescribed the simultaneous administration of eye drops and ointments, then you should first instill the medicine, and then, after a few minutes, lay the ointment behind the lower eyelid. If everything is done the other way around, the ointment will not allow drops to penetrate through the cornea.
How to instill drops in the eyes
Wash hands thoroughly. If the bottle with drops is stored in the refrigerator, it should be removed at least 10 minutes before the procedure, since the cold solution does not penetrate well through the cornea. This drug cannot be heated, as it may lose its properties.
Take a mirror and sit back so that you can lean back slightly. Tilt your head back and pull the lower eyelid with your left hand until a crease forms. If you pull the eyelid too far, the medicine may leak out of the eye. It is more convenient to hold a bottle in your right hand.
Look up, while not losing sight of the bottle with drops, bring drops to the eyes, without touching the tip of the eyelid, so as not to damage it. Drop the required amount of solution into the conjunctival sac.
Cover your eye and easily press the index finger on the inner corner of the eye. Blot the eyelid with a dry sterile cloth. Repeat with the second eye.
Features of application for children
In children of any age, a disease such as conjunctivitis can develop. At the same time, the eyes become red, itch and give the child an unpleasant sensation. For the treatment of the disease, the optometrist prescribes eye drops, but many mothers face the problem of how to properly drip the drops to the baby. The following instruction will help in this:
- Tightly swaddle the baby and ask dad to pick him up.
- Let dad pick up the brightest toy and hold it so that the child looks up.
- Quickly pull the baby's eyelid and drip a drop of the solution.
If the solution nevertheless fell on a closed eyelid, do not get upset, you need to massage the inner corner of the eye with a slight movement and for some time to keep the baby in a horizontal position.
You can drip the medicine when the baby is sleeping, but in this case you should make sure that it penetrates under the eyelid.
How to store
All drugs for instillation into the eyes must be stored at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C so that they do not lose their properties. You can use open eye drops for no more than a month.
