For residents of the southern regions, the problem of ripening tomatoes does not exist. There is a warm autumn, the cold does not come soon. And what about people living in the middle lane? How to accelerate the ripening of tomatoes?
After all, as is usually done: when the cold August nights begin, all green fruits are cut off. Then they wait until they blush on their own. No doubt, it’s possible to save almost the entire crop. But his taste is not as attractive as from a bush.
We start the race in the fall. Who will come to the finish line first - ripe red tomatoes or late blight? And let's see what methods of accelerated ripening of tomatoes offer us various sources.
Spraying
In order for the tomatoes to ripen faster, use various mixtures to spray the bushes. All of them burn the foliage and cause its yellowing. This allows the roots to strengthen the nutrition of the remaining fruits, without wasting it on the leaves.
The compositions are completely different, but the principle of operation is the same:
- To 10 liters of pure water add 35 drops of alcohol tincture of the most common iodine.
- In 5 l of water, 2 matchboxes of urea are dissolved.
- 300 g of table salt is dissolved in 6 l of pure water.
- Medium pink solution of potassium permanganate.
- 2 tbsp. l superphosphate is stirred in a bucket of warm water. Two days later use.

Wound
It has long been noticed that tomatoes that have skin injuries ripen much earlier than whole counterparts. So why not take this method into service?
We stock up on a thin wooden stick or even an ordinary toothpick. We also need vodka or diluted alcohol for sterilization. Now dip the tip of the toothpick into an antiseptic, about halfway. And stick in the tomato 2 times. Preferably near the stalk.
Dip the toothpick into vodka again and poke the next fruit. The wound will wind up, and the tomato itself will ripen much faster. Of course, many tomatoes cannot be processed this way, but at least part of the crop will avoid cold nights.

Package
Of course, not the package itself, but its contents. Many people know that if you put at least one red to the green fruits, then ripening is accelerated significantly. This is ensured not by the presence of red pigment in the ripened tomato, but by the release of ethylene. By the way, apples and banana peels also emit ethylene. This property of them can be used for their own purposes.
To do this, you need a dense plastic bag. He is put on the largest, but still unripe brush of tomatoes. At the bottom of the bag put a piece of banana peel, half an apple or a small ripe tomato. Next, the package must be tightly tied and left for 3 days.After this time, the bag is completely removed and transferred to another brush.
And tomatoes after this procedure begin to grow brown already on the 5-6th day. And what prevents you from hanging such tomato boosters on every green brush?
Tip. One bag can be used many times. Only the filling is changed as soon as signs of mold appear on it, or rot.
Overlap
The method is called that way, because the outflow of phytosynthesis products to the roots is blocked. Most of the nutrients begin to flow to the fruits, which accelerates their ripening. It is carried out by two methods:
- Tug of war. With a thin wire of any material, the trunk is gently pulled at a level no higher than 14 cm from the soil surface. They try to pull the stem, but not cut it through.
- Notch. The stem is cut with a sharp knife directly in the center at a height of 6 cm from the ground. The length of the cut is about 7 cm. A match, a wooden chip, a toothpick are inserted inside.
It is advisable to pre-rinse all tools and materials with any antiseptic. Because the procedure is traumatic, pathogenic bacteria can be introduced into the wound. Then the bush will not pour fruit, but will begin to fight the infection. We are now not at all interested in it.
