Beans are a very tasty and healthy crop that gives a rich harvest. That is why planting under beans is given a special place in the sun. However, planting and growing a rich harvest is not enough, it is very important to preserve it. After all, besides you, there are people who want to enjoy delicious beans, namely, bean kernels. Even if you put the beans in an airtight container, after a couple of months you can only find holey fruits eaten by this pest. That is why the storage of beans in the root is different from the storage of other cereals.
Bean kernel
This insect lives in the beds, in the place of storage of beans (for example, in warehouses), right in the green pods. For active life and reproduction of the pest, high humidity, nutrition in the form of beans and the warm season are needed. The grain penetrates the bean pod and lays about 30-50 larvae in it. After a few weeks, the larvae grow and turn into adults. The female can lay eggs not only in the bean pod, but also inside the bean itself. This is where pests can come from in a sealed can.
You need to get rid of bean kernels at the planting stage. Before planting beans, the land is carefully treated with pesticides. Only ideally even and absolutely whole grains of beans should be allowed to land. Grain lays the larvae inside the bean, under its thin film. If the larvae along with the infected bean fall into the ground - you can spoil the entire crop.
How to prepare beans for storage
The key to the safety of beans is its drying. Properly dried beans can be stored for years, and no pests are afraid of it.
- We collect beans from the garden, right in the pods.
- Next, the beans must be left in a well-ventilated and sunny place. In the villages, beans were always dried on the fence.
- You can sprinkle beans on the balcony by pre-laying a newspaper or blank paper on the floor.
- It takes about 10-15 days to dry the beans. Beans are dried if its pod becomes yellow, crumbly, slightly open. Grains must be hard.
- After this, beans should be poured onto a baking sheet and slightly warmed. The heating temperature is about 60 degrees, the time is at least half an hour. The heat kills the possible larvae and helps the beans to be stored for much longer.
- Beans warmed in the oven can be eaten, however, they are not suitable for planting.
- If you need seeds that will retain germination, but will be protected from pests, put a bag of beans for a while in the freezer. Low temperature will destroy the larvae of the weevil, but leave the grain “alive”.
After such a phased processing, you can not be afraid of bugs and other pests.
Where and what to store beans
After drying, the beans should be placed in an airtight container. It can be a glass jar, a plastic bag or a plastic container. The main thing is that no living creature could penetrate inside. If you are going to store beans for a long time, you can do the following. Heat the beans in a baking sheet or in a dry frying pan under the lid. Do not let the beans begin to burst. Then pour them into clean, sterilized jars and close the lid. The bank should be opened only in winter.
Store beans in a cool and dark place. If you are afraid that a bean seed may start in the beans, the beans should be kept in the cold. Grains can tolerate low temperatures and do not lose their taste and nutritional properties. Before the onset of frost, beans can be kept in the freezer, and then taken to the balcony.
It is very important not to keep the beans warm - moist and warm air promotes the germination of grains. Bean sprouts are not eaten, but it is quite possible to plant them (if spring is in the yard). If you are going to store the beans in a canvas bag, first dip it in a saline solution. After that, dry the fabric without rinsing. A salty bag protects your beans not only from the grain, but also from other insects.
How to store beans
The following tips will help you keep the beans until the next harvest.
- If the bean crop is very rich, and you expect to keep the beans not for one year, but for several years, you need to do the following. Pour a little ash into the bottom of the sterilized cans, and then pour the beans. After opening the jar, the beans will just need to be washed before cooking. Ash protects grains from various pests and bugs.
- To prevent bugs from getting into the beans, put several chopped pieces of garlic in a container with beans.
- If there are a lot of beans, it can be stored in boxes or crates. However, the walls of the container must first be laid out with newsprint. Ink protects the crop from insects.
- Bean containers can be stored in kitchen drawers at room temperature. However, it will be much better if you keep a bag of beans in the cold - in the cellar, closet, basement.
- If a bean seed has already spoiled your crop once, you can protect the beans as follows. In a bean container, place a sprig of rosemary, dill, or calendula. Many insects, including the caryopsis, cannot tolerate such aromas.
With these tips, you can cook bean dishes throughout the year.
How to Preserve Green Beans
Green beans have a special taste and delicate aroma. If you want to keep the tender spring taste of young beans, you can just freeze it.
For freezing, you need to take fresh, freshly picked pods. Green bean pods need to be thoroughly washed and cut off the tails of them. You also need to cut out all the black dots and damage on the surface of the pod. If you cut the beans into small pieces before preparing the beans, do so. Bean pods can be frozen and whole, without cutting.
Then the beans need to be blanched. Put the bean pods in boiling water for three minutes, and put a large cup of ice next to it. When three minutes have passed, remove the beans from boiling water and lower them into ice water. This method of processing beans will save maximum beneficial properties and taste.
Before freezing, beans must be thoroughly dried. Spread the processed bean slices on a clean cloth and allow excess water to drain. Otherwise, ice crystals will form on the grains, which will deprive green beans of a special flavor. After drying, distribute the pods in packages so that, if necessary, take only one portion and not to defrost excess.
Beans are a tasty and nutritious product that is used in the preparation of many dishes. Vegetarians cannot imagine life without beans, because these beans can be compared to meat in terms of protein. Regular consumption of beans improves the functioning of the kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, and nervous system. If you often eat beans, you are not afraid of plaque and stone. Plant and grow beans, protect the crop from bugs and then you can enjoy the taste and nutritional value of this product for a whole year.
