The content of the article
From the first days of living in the animal’s house, we begin to imbue with love for the cat, treat the pet with tenderness and special trepidation. What can we say about pets who have been living in the family for many years and have become their full members? And when a close friend gets in trouble, I want to help and ease his suffering. Pet disease is much more difficult to tolerate, because unlike a person, a cat cannot tell about the nature and localization of pain, often we make a diagnosis only presumably based on the characteristics of the pet’s behavior. In this article, we will talk about the difficulty of urinating - what to do if the cat cannot pee, walks in circles at the tray and mews plaintively. Let's try to figure out possible diagnoses, and also learn how to quickly and safely alleviate the condition of a poor animal.
How to understand that a cat can’t go "a little"
Caring owners always notice if the cat is behaving strangely, not as usual. If the animal has any problems with urination, he walks around the tray, trying on, as if he did not dare to pee. Some owners may suggest that the cat behaves this way because it is looking for a partner, but this is a misconception. During difficult urination, the animal can meow painfully. Sometimes an animal approaches the tray very often, because it cannot timely and completely empty the bladder. Problems with the urinary system can occur anywhere - most often the animal does not have time to reach the tray, can pour small portions of urine in uninhabited places - do not scold the cat, it is not able to control the painful organ.
Sometimes urine itself can tell about the disease - blood streaks may appear in it, urine can get an unpleasant (possibly purulent) smell. Sometimes the structure and color of the urine changes - it becomes more yellow or brown from the blood in the composition. Sometimes a cat can lie directly on the floor near the tray - so she shows her discomfort to the owner. After a small portion of urine, the cat licks itself, piteously mews, uncharacteristically stretches its hind legs. All this speaks of various problems in the urination of the animal. It is more difficult for those owners whose pets go to meet the need on the street, however, the general deterioration of the cat's condition can be seen with the naked eye. The cat cannot show its behavior at the place of need correction, therefore, unfortunately, the owner can not guess about the problem. Check the suspicion is quite real - you need to probe the lower abdomen of a cat. With problems with urination, the abdomen will be swollen from fullness of the bladder, this is especially noticeable in kittens.
What is the cause of urination problems
Only a doctor can give a cat an accurate diagnosis, but if all of the above symptoms coincide with the behavior of your pet, most likely he has a kidney stone disease or one of the varieties of cystitis.
Urolithiasis is a fairly common diagnosis in cats, especially in modern cats, which move little and eat only dry food. Such food in combination with a small amount of fluid leads to the formation of stones and crystals in the kidneys. Sometimes the stones begin to move towards the aisles. The most dangerous thing is if the duct is clogged with stone - in this case, urine comes from the kidneys, accumulates more and more, and does not find a way out. This condition is very dangerous - it threatens a rupture of the bladder and the invariable death of the animal. With this diagnosis, pain during urination is especially pronounced, but usually there is no blood in the urine. Confirm or refute urolithiasis can a blood test, urine and, necessarily, ultrasound.
This is another common problem with cats. Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder and urinary ducts. With cystitis, it is precisely frequent urination in small portions that is characteristic. If the inflammation is serious enough, the swollen urinary canal can increase so much that the urine simply cannot pass through it. Cystitis is an insidious disease, it can come back again and again. Cystitis can be bacterial, struvite-induced, or idiopathic.
Bacterial cystitis is caused by bacteria - most often staphylococcus and Escherichia coli, which penetrate from a nearby anus. Such cystitis is most common, it is usually exposed to animals in old age.
Struvite-induced cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder against a background of thick and crystallized urine. This is the first stage of urolithiasis.
The exact causes of idiopathic cystitis have not been identified, since there is no inflammation according to blood and urine tests, sand is also not detected by ultrasound. There is an opinion that this type of cystitis can occur against the background of severe stresses.
Sometimes the cause of problems with urination can be kidney damage - if the organ is not functioning properly. It is very rare, but it still happens that the cause of a narrow urethra of the animal may be congenital anomalies. Moreover, sometimes this does not occur in childhood, problems can occur already in an adult cat. In this case, any hypothermia usually ends with acute attacks.
What triggers the development of various diseases of the urinary system? As noted, most often - this is a lack of fluid with the constant use of dry food. A large amount of salt in food, excessive consumption of raw fish and meat, a hereditary factor, excess weight - all this can cause problems with urination. And these problems should be solved as quickly as possible.
What to do if the cat can’t go "a little"
Unfortunately, we learn about the disease of an animal even when its condition noticeably worsens, and all the signs become apparent. What to do? How to help your friend?
If the cat is tormented and constantly mews - the animal is in critical condition, it is urgent to take the pet to the veterinarian. And urgently - it does not wait for Monday or tomorrow morning, but immediately, because the bladder can burst at any minute, and then death can not be avoided. In the clinic (some of which work around the clock), the animal will undergo diagnostic measures, but first of all the cat will receive first aid - a special catheter will be inserted to help empty the animal’s bladder. In no case should you self-medicate, because sometimes it can lead to irreparable consequences. For example, if you give the animal diuretics with a clogged urinary tract, the bladder will burst much faster, death cannot be avoided.
Be sure to change the diet of the animal, consult your doctor about this. Include more liquid foods in your food, always keep a bowl of clean and fresh drinking water in sight. In addition, the doctor may prescribe a special diet that dissolves the fine grains of salt in the kidneys. Milk, fatty meat and fish (especially raw) are still banned.
In almost all cases (except idiopathic cystitis), the animal will need antibiotics. Pain medications or anti-inflammatory drugs are sometimes prescribed. With a spasm of the muscles of the urinary canal, the animal can be given an antispasmodic, however, remember that the cat's hind legs may refuse Noshpa from the cat - this drug is dangerous. It is better to give Papaverine in the same dosage.
Already after the obstruction of the urinary canals has been refuted, you can solder the cat with decoctions of diuretic herbs - lavender, plantain, wild rose, lingonberry, horsetail. Boiled pumpkin and strawberry juice, which is given literally from a pipette, is very useful for the urinary system of the animal. Sometimes ready-made herbal preparations for the urinary system are sold in a pharmacy.
It is very effective to warm the cat's pelvis in warm or hot water, although the animal itself does not tolerate this procedure very well. Put on gloves and lower your pet halfway into a container of warm water, you can add hot water as you get used to it. Be careful - you can not lower the animal into the water below the level of the heart.
In the spring, be sure to include young nettles in the cat's diet - this is an excellent prevention of cystitis.
In veterinary pharmacies, there is an excellent drug - Kot Erwin, which can be used in the treatment and prevention of urolithiasis. It has a diuretic effect, dissolves and removes the stone from the body, quickly and effectively relieves inflammation.
Remember that some diseases are chronic, in order to maintain health, the course of treatment should be carried out regularly - about 1-2 times a year.
In order to avoid relapse in the future, it is necessary to carefully observe preventive measures for the ICD. This is an active lifestyle, balanced and competent nutrition, increased immunity and timely access to a doctor. Care for a castrated cat should be more thorough, according to all antiseptic standards. And try not to let the cat lie on the drafts and the cold floor - this provokes the development of cystitis. Follow these simple rules, and your pet will delight you with good health and good mood!
