Peeling skin on the face: what to do?

The skin has various properties in various parts of the body. It is the coarsest on the palms and soles. Here, the epidermis has more layers and is therefore less susceptible to adverse factors. The most delicate skin is located on the face. Here the epidermis is thin and therefore quickly reacts to any changes in the body or the environment. Why does the skin peel off and what should be done in this case?

Diseases due to which the skin is peeling

Sometimes this problem is caused by serious skin diseases. They must be distinguished from each other and from non-dangerous idiopathic peeling. Of all skin diseases on the face, the following are most often manifested:

  1. Contact dermatitis. It is also called cold or thermal allergy. It arises as a reaction to the influence of an adverse factor. It occurs only in people prone to dermatitis. It differs in that the area of redness, burning and peeling has clear boundaries.
  2. Allergic dermatitis. It manifests itself in the form of urticaria - a rash on the face represented by blisters. Elements of the rash are pink in color, protrude above the surface of the skin, can peel off, pass quickly and appear in a new place. It occurs with the action of an allergen on the skin of the face.
  3. Atopic dermatitis. It differs from the previous one in that the allergen enters the body, for example, with food, and the allergy appears on the face.
  4. Psoriasis. This disease has an unknown etiology. It manifests itself in a rash in the form of nodules and spots of red color, which merge with each other. The lesions itch and peel. After combing, the surface begins to bleed. Psoriasis is rarely manifested on the face, but atypical forms can be localized here.
  5. Seborrhea. Disease of the sebaceous glands may be accompanied by a decrease or increase in their functioning. In the first case, dry seborrhea occurs, which is manifested by peeling of the skin without signs of inflammation. White itchy scales most often appear in the eyebrow area, along the hairline and in the beard area in men.
  6. Systemic lupus erythematosus. SLE has an unknown etiology, but is often manifested by photodermatitis. Under the influence of sunlight on the back of the nose and cheeks appear pathological foci of pink. In shape, they resemble a butterfly. Sometimes the foci begin to peel off.

If peeling on the face is similar to one of the above, you should consult a dermatologist. External exposure is not always able to cure these diseases. It is important to establish a diagnosis in time and start taking combination therapy.

Non-pathological peeling

Skin problems are not always caused by the disease. Sometimes the influence of environmental factors or special conditions of the body can cause a change in the properties of the epidermis and lead to its peeling. Most often, facial skin peels off due to reasons such as:

  1. Frost. In the cold season, the skin dries quickly. The face is that part of the body that cannot be protected from the action of the external environment. Hands are in gloves, the body is in clothes, but the face is constantly suffering from cold air. Most often, cheeks peel off from frost.
  2. Cold wind and damp weather. This is what is called "weathering." Most often, those parts of the face that are well hydrated are exposed to this process - the area under the nose, around the eyes and lips.
  3. Sunburn. Most often this happens in the summer on the beach. Unprotected skin quickly burns, turns red, and then peels off. However, ultraviolet rays act on the skin of the face and in urban environments. You can also get a sunburn in the city that will cause flaking.
  4. Hypovitaminosis. This condition cannot be called a disease. Everyone periodically lacks vitamins. For example, this occurs in the spring. Peeling may cause a deficiency of B vitamins and vitamin E.
  5. Hypervitaminosis. Excess vitamins are as harmful as deficiency. Peeling on the face, as well as cracking of the lips can occur as a result of uncontrolled intake of vitamin A.
  6. Pregnancy. During the bearing of the fetus, several unfavorable factors affect the woman’s body at once. Firstly, there is a relative deficiency of vitamins, since some of them are used to ensure the vital functions of the fetus. Secondly, changes in the hormonal background also lead to cosmetic problems and the drying out of the epidermis.
  7. Improper care. Dry skin and peeling can cause ordinary soap and even hard water. It is recommended to wash with special lotions for sensitive and dry skin.
