Today in the world there is a huge number of different breeds of dogs, each of which is unique and valuable in its own way. Unfortunately, there are endangered species of breeds, which today number less than a thousand individuals around the world. One of these breeds is the Taigans. This is an amazingly fast hunting and guard greyhound, which is unfamiliar outside its homeland. From ancient times, the Taigans lived in Kyrgyzstan and helped people in cattle breeding. Over time, industrialization took its toll, the number of livestock fell sharply, today it is only a few farmlands that grow herds for the sale of meat. Accordingly, the urgent need for shepherd dogs gradually disappeared. However, modern breeders claim that the breed has a future - today a group of enthusiasts in the dog’s homeland are reviving the dog population in every possible way, increasing the number of purebred individuals and preventing the breed from dying. This gives hope for the preservation of the primitive strength, power and speed of the dog, because the Taigans have amazing qualities.
The history of the origin of the Taigans
This is truly an ancient breed, the mention of which was found in the books of chroniclers of the Middle Ages. The most famous dog of this breed is the taigan, which belonged to the well-known hero Manas in his homeland. The dog's name was Kumaik, which meant her birth from a strong and strong vulture bird. The epic tells how amazing speed and power the dog had. Indeed, Taigan, or the Kyrgyz Greyhound, has unique abilities. Today, it can reach speeds of more than 50 km per hour, which puts the animal on one step with the fastest mammals in the world, for example, with a cheetah. In ancient times, a taigan was simply necessary; a representative of this dog lived in every house, or rather, in every yurt. Taigans moved perfectly, helping to hunt a small beast - hares, foxes, badgers, mountain goats. The long legs of the greyhound allowed her to easily move in any terrain. Moreover, the dog moved quickly and silently, not only along the steppe's flat reliefs, but also along the mountainous areas, without losing speed.
Taigans had a powerful protective instinct, they could not sleep for days on end, protecting the herd and property of the owner. If necessary, the Taigans easily repelled the attack of the wolves. Surprisingly, even wolves, sensing the smell of a dog, did not always decide to hunt, because they knew that the chances were equal. A long stay at the heights made the Taigan an incredibly hardy and strong breed of dog, which for a long time can be in conditions of discharged air. Dogs are able to spend several days without water and food, as well as withstand tremendous physical exertion. The difficult living conditions of the animal formed a dog with a steel and unbending character.

Centuries-old trials and training made the dog not only strong and hardy, but also incredibly smart. Such a dog will never touch livestock; a dog treats its pets as if it were its wards, only if they don’t want to compete with the taigan. Dogs of this breed are considered very smart and smart, they will not bother the owner in vain with an empty bark. However, if necessary, the dog will definitely inform the person about the danger or change in the situation. The ability of Taigans to independently make decisions and navigate in space is highly appreciated. Most of all Kyrgyz people appreciate the Taigans for fearlessness before the wolves, not every dog can boast of this. Taigans alone can strangle a jackal.
The high intelligence of the dog makes it unable to submit to a weak, stupid or cowardly owner. These are dogs for strong-willed people who are able to show that in this pack people are above all else. Taigan is considered a proud and freedom-loving dog, which will not dance in front of the owner in order to gain self-favor. However, if a person brings up the Taigan from early childhood, the puppy from the first years will be devoted to the person, if necessary, protect him, without fear for his life. The Taigans have a very distrustful attitude towards strangers; this is, nevertheless, a guard.
Some dogs classify Taigans as gloomy and even phlegmatic breeds that do not have vivid emotions. In fact, this is not so. Just a taigan will not jump around the owner to show him his love. The dog expresses his loyal qualities through care, protection of property and family members.
How to Contain Taigans - Care Features
As you probably already understood, dogs of this breed are not for everyone. Of course, Taigans will not be able to be kept in an apartment - these are freedom-loving animals who like the expanse of the steppe or the height of the mountainous terrain. A great place to keep Taigans is a private country house with a large local area. The dog is adapted to the heat of the day and the piercing night cold - an air cushion is formed in the undercoat, which protects the animal from temperature changes. In the care and maintenance of the dog is quite unpretentious. If you keep your pet in the enclosure, you need to give the dog the opportunity to “inspect” the nearest area a couple of times a day. It is best to let the dog out of the enclosure for the whole night - this is a great way to let the dog feel its protective purpose. Ideally, it is better to start Taigans in areas where there are rivers, mountains, forests. Only with sufficient physical exertion will the dog develop correctly.
Today you can buy a purebred taigan only in its historical homeland - in Kyrgyzstan. There are not so many breeders of this breed in this country, everyone knows each other at odds. To restore the population of the breed, puppies are rarely sold abroad, otherwise it will subsequently be difficult to use in mating. Taigan is a specific breed of dog that can become a true friend and an indispensable guard, but not for every person - remember this.
