For gardeners who love unusual exotic vegetable crops, breeders have created an interesting variety of tomatoes, which is called Firewood. So called tomatoes because they have an original form that resembles a log. On a plant a bunch looks like a bunch of firewood. Tomatoes of this variety can be grown on the loggia and in the apartment, due to this they have earned a large number of positive reviews from planting enthusiasts.
Distinctive features of the variety Firewood
Tomato grows up to 30-40 cm, it can be grown in open beds, in greenhouses, on loggias, in an apartment. A variety of early ripeness, undersized, tomatoes have an elongated shape and bifurcate at the end. The length reaches 15 cm, weight - 80 g. The flesh is soft, friable, lack of wateriness.
When the fruit ripens, there are no green spots on the stalk. The ripening period is from 90 to 100 days. The plant actively bears fruit, tomatoes are formed almost simultaneously. A tomato of this variety usually gives a rich harvest, about 1.5 kg of vegetables comes from each bush. Due to the short stature and a small number of leaves, the variety is unpretentious in cultivation and care.
The color of the tomatoes is saturated red, the flesh is characterized by density and meatiness. Tomatoes do not have a large number of seeds, so they can be preserved as a whole. Ketchups and sauces made from this type of tomato come out delicious and thick.
The vegetable has an appetizing aroma and pleasant taste - sweetish, slightly fresh, not sour, which is liked by both adult gourmets and kids.
Growing rules
Growing tomatoes of the Firewood variety, you should follow some recommendations:
- Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in late February - early March.
- It is advisable to check the material for germination, for this you need to pour the seeds into a glass of water and carefully place: those that come up are empty, they can be thrown away.
- This is followed by the stage of seed disinfection in non-concentrated manganese solution.
- It is necessary to prepare the soil, it is best to calcine it in a water bath - this is necessary in order to get rid of the larvae and eggs of the parasites that may be in it.
- After the first shoots appear, seedlings should be placed in separate containers.
- Tomato bushes are planted on the beds when the ambient temperature is established at a level of at least 15 degrees.
- Before planting in open ground, seedlings need to be hardened - containers with bushes must be taken out to the street so that over time they stayed there longer.
- When the seedlings are planted in the beds or in the greenhouse, it is necessary to provide its support - although the bush is undersized, it often breaks under the heavy weight of tomatoes.
How to care and harvest
The variety of Firewood is quite fertile, mainly it gives a rich harvest. However, you still need to follow some simple rules in order to significantly increase it:
- This vegetable crop loves loose soil. When growing tomatoes in pots, one should not forget about drainage so that enough water and air enter the root system.
- When growing on beds, planting should be protected from pests. You can put an egg shell or a little onion peel in a hole.
- If the land is not fertile, it is possible to place humus or peat crumb in all the pits. However, before immersing a bush in a hole, you need to pour a layer of soil here in order to avoid getting burned by young shoots.
- Then, while the culture is growing, it is enough to fertilize it with mineral or organic fertilizers a couple of times.
- This type of tomato is resistant to diseases and pests. However, regular inspection of the bushes is still necessary. And if there is a risk of infection from other crops, you should treat the plant with soapy water, or place fresh celandine or wormwood on the beds.
- Harvesting is carried out in July-August. It depends on the time of planting seedlings.
Some gardeners, in order to alleviate the stress that the plant is experiencing, pluck several half-ripe tomatoes and take them home so that they ripen there.
