Tomatoes are a very popular product, they grow culture around the world, each region tries to adapt this plant to its conditions and climate. Also in Russia, breeders are working on breeding new varieties, improving yields, cold resistance and taste. As a rule, far from all the necessary qualities are combined in one grade. But this does not stop gardeners, they continue to grow their favorite, but not ideal varieties of tomatoes.
One of these varieties - Cowhide ears - is an excellent variety, but it has some disadvantages. This tomato got its name for a shape similar to the ears of oxen or bulls. This variety is included in the register of achievements of breeding selection of the Russian Federation. It can be grown throughout Russia. Even in regions where more thermophilic varieties do not produce crops, the cow’s ear bears fruit and gives birth.
Description
It belongs to the salad type of tomatoes, it is a juicy, dense, fleshy fruit, with a small number of seeds, oblong with a slight ribbing. The weight of one tomato is about 100 grams, but experienced gardeners claim that there can be fruits and up to 200 grams in weight. The skin of the fetus is quite dense. The color is red, from brightly saturated to paler. It is important that in which region this variety of tomatoes would not be grown, and in what conditions, in greenhouses or on the open ground, the taste does not change, it remains soft, sour-sweet, juicy, not watery.
Since the variety is medium late, the tomato is cold-resistant, tolerates temperature extremes and gives a good harvest even in adverse conditions. Also a positive feature of the variety is resistance to disease, including late blight. But for all varieties of tomatoes, it is necessary to carry out disease prevention, spraying. In hot and dry summers, mandatory watering is required to ensure the juiciness of the fruit.
Another plus of this variety of tomato is considered unpretentiousness and ease of cultivation. It is well suited for novice gardeners, since at least some kind of crop will still work.
Growing Features
- Tomato Cow's ears are grown like other varieties - from seeds. Seeds are prepared for planting in a solution of potassium permanganate, planted in a specially prepared mixture of soil, peat and humus.
- The plant sprouts and germinates on a windowsill or balcony, the optimum temperature for rapid germination is 20-25 degrees.
- After the seedlings let out 2-4 leaves, and the stalk becomes resistant and dense, it is stopped in separate containers for growing.
- Seedlings are planted in open ground or a greenhouse, depending on climatic and weather conditions, around mid-May.
- To form the correct shape of the bush and increase productivity, it is necessary to trim - the so-called stepchildren, three brushes and more.
- Next, do not forget about the traditional weeding from weeds, hilling the soil, watering.
- It is also worth worrying about pests, aphids, bears, spider mites. If infection is suspected, treat with chemicals or soapy water.
- To increase productivity and to strengthen the bush, it is necessary to give the plant fertilizing, mineral or organic fertilizers.
Storage
The fruits have a fairly dense skin, which allows them to be stored in a dark place for a long time. For long-term storage, tomatoes should be put in boxes with straw or sawdust and placed in a cool place.
Note! Late variety, tomatoes ripen in late summer, early autumn, and the fruits can be kept fresh for a long time, which is not typical for other varieties.

Application
Cowhide Tomato ears are universal with respect to application, it is very tasty in and of itself, in a salad, and also perfectly suitable for preservation. It can be used for pickling, pickling, making pasta, sauces, dressings, juice, ketchup. Even after processing with high temperatures, these tomatoes and dishes with their use do not lose their saturated color.
