The appearance of a new pet in the house is a very important decision, which needs to be approached as responsibly as possible. It is necessary not only to think about what the baby will eat and where to sleep, it is important to correctly select the dog breed that will satisfy the needs of a particular person. After all, an animal, depending on the breed, can be active or melancholy, companionable or alone. A dog can be a guard, hunting, or fighting dog - this must be taken into account when choosing a dog. You also need to pay attention to whether there are children and other pets in the new family, and how the dog can react to them. Today we’ll talk about the Hungarian kuvas - what kind of dog it is, what characteristic features the dog differs in, in which family he will feel as comfortable as possible, and also who from home can become a real friend for the dog.
History of breed origin
Hungarian kuvas is one of the oldest breeds that has been known for several centuries in a row. In Russia, kuvas is little known and unpopular, however, in the USA and Europe, a dog of this breed is appreciated for its watch and hunting qualities. Since ancient times, a dog with white wavy hair was only a shepherd’s dog - it guarded the cattle well, could attack the enemy, protected the owner’s property. In the 15th century, the Hungarian king attached special importance to the dogs of this breed, he bred the best breeding individuals who lived at court and served the royal family. The king could give one of his subjects a puppy of Hungarian kuvas, this was a sign of special trust and appreciation.
Only dogs with a light color and medium-length hair were used in breeding. Light dogs were visible on the background of the herd or in the thicket, this was important during the hunt. The man saw and well distinguished the dog in the distance, this protected the animal from a bullet or arrow. Moreover, kuvas itself was able to go to a large beast - a wolf, a boar or a bear, so much courage and courage in it. The medium-length coat allowed the dog to pass through the thicket without hindrance. Despite the fact that the breed has been known for many centuries, it was officially recorded only in the 30s of the last century, and in Russia it was presented at the exhibition only in 2007.
What does Hungarian kuvas look like?
Characteristics of the Hungarian Kuvas
Hungarian kuvas is a large breed of dog that will not do unnecessary gestures in vain. This means that the dog does not need to be taught useless or demonstrative commands, smart dogs do not understand the meaning of what is happening. And if it makes no sense, you can hardly force the dog to execute such commands. But at the same time, the dog cannot be called lazy or inactive. If necessary, the dog can take long walks, inspect the area and walk more than 30 km through natural thickets. Dogs of this breed are characterized by an increased sense of responsibility for the owner, entrusted territory and protected cattle. The dog clearly distinguishes between poultry, livestock and other domestic animals on their own and others, this is especially important if you live in a private house with your own farm.
There is an opinion that dogs of the Hungarian Kuvas breed are uncontrollable and aggressive. In fact, this is not so. If the kuvas is properly educated and socialized in a timely manner, the dog will be a very devoted friend and cultured pet. It is very important to start bringing the puppy into society as soon as possible, constantly contacting strangers and other animals. If you do not, in the future you may encounter real problems and even tragic consequences. Large dogs grow up long enough, so they need to be socialized much longer - until the age of three. It is this complexity that leads to the fact that not every layman will undertake to train the Hungarian kuvas. Only experienced dog handlers and breeders can do this.
The rest of the dog is very smart and intellectually developed. The guard of your home will not experience aggression towards each guest. The dog quickly understands the situation, is able to assess the degree of threat and will necessarily inform the person about the guest in the entrusted territory. If the owner is in danger, the Hungarian kuvas will rush into battle without a shadow of doubt, will fight until the last breath. Kuvas responds very well to training, performs the necessary commands. It is noteworthy that the dog has been learning new information for a very long time, it can take a lot of time to learn some techniques. But remember that sooner or later you will be able to achieve what you want, the main thing in this matter is patience and perseverance. In no case can Hungarian kuvas be punished by force - a proud dog will not tolerate such an attitude and harbor a grudge for a long time. But love, affection and care can bring amazing results - a friendly and sociable pet will grow out of a closed and aggressive puppy. For the Hungarian kuvas, the main thing is frequent, almost constant communication with the owner. If you treat the dog scornfully, this will affect its character.
Features of the content of Hungarian kuvas
As a rule, these large dogs are not kept in apartments; Hungarian kuvas is needed in order to protect the territory entrusted. This is not just desirable, but vital for the dog. If the territory where the dog lives is small enough, you will have to take the dog for additional walks. Kuvas in unfamiliar areas behaves quite wary - this is normal.
- Bathing. As a rule, a dog is considered a street dog; therefore, it does not need to arrange too frequent baths. Hungarian kuvas should be washed as it gets dirty or once a month. Moreover, it is really difficult to do this - the dog is large enough and just one person can’t cope. Especially if the dog is against water procedures. When bathing, you need to use special shampoos for long-haired dogs, which help the coat roll less.
- Wool. The hair of the animal is quite long, kuvas also has an impressive undercoat, which is updated twice a year. This means that the wool will roll around the house - unfortunately, this is so.To at least somehow minimize the process, you need to regularly and daily comb the dog with a special brush. It is necessary to comb out the animal’s hair not only during molting, but constantly. If you don’t do this, it will go astray, which later is very difficult to get rid of - you will need the help of a professional.
- Training. By nature, the dog has excellent qualities, the human task is to strengthen them and develop them in the right direction. Hungarian kuvas perfectly performs tasks, adapts perfectly and does everything that is required of it, but only under two conditions. The first is if they begin to practice the dog early, from the age of four months. The second - if the training is regular and daily. If you throw training, the dog quickly forgets the information. Especially difficult is the transitional age of the dog - 1-1.5 years, at this time, exit to people and contact with other animals should be mandatory.
- Claws, ears, teeth. If the dog is kept in an enclosure or in a house adjoining area where the claws are constantly ground, then there is no need to trim them further. If the dog’s stomach is in the apartment, be sure to cut the claws, as they can grow into soft tissues, injuring the pads on the legs. From an early age, you need to accustom your dog to brushing your ears and teeth so that the animal is not afraid and perceives the process adequately. Ears should be cleaned once every 2-3 weeks, wiping the inside with a piece of bandage soaked in hydrogen peroxide. The teeth are cleaned of tartar as it appears.
- Diseases Hungarian kuvas is initially considered a very strong and healthy dog, as natural strength was the main condition for the continuation of the genus. Weak and sick dogs did not participate in subsequent mating. However, the large weight of the dog and modern living conditions of the animal lead to the fact that the pet may have problems with the musculoskeletal system. The most common diseases of Hungarian kuvas are arthritis, arthrosis, hip dysplasia, osteochondrosis. To prevent this, three main conditions are needed. First, the dog should receive a sufficient amount of activity. If the dog does not move, its joints gradually weaken and cannot withstand the load. The second condition is a competent, balanced and healthy diet with a lot of calcium and phosphorus. In addition, the diet of the pet should have vitamins and mineral complexes that will make up for the deficiency of certain substances in the body. The third condition is a timely visit to the doctor and regular preventive examination of the veterinarian. A specialist will help you in time to recognize the problem and prevent its development. In addition to joints, Kuvas can also have vision problems. But, as a rule, they occur in dogs of a more mature age.
Proper care and adequate maintenance of the dog is the prevention of many pet health problems.
Diet Hungarian kuvas
In Russia and the CIS countries it is quite difficult to find a purebred kuvas, as the breed is not widespread and the puppy will have to be brought from other countries. The cost of a good puppy of Hungarian kuvas reaches 100 thousand rubles or more. With a competent approach, proper upbringing and adequate maintenance, the dog can become not only a faithful ally, watchful watchman and companion, but also a true loyal friend.
